If you didn't know him you can't imagine what he was like; and if you did know him you can't explain him. Either way, the great spirit which temporarily took the form of John Dorman has seen fit to depart this life, presumably for a realm more suited to his capacity. John had an utterly unique personality which manifested itself in the most amazing actions, words and art. One of these days I'll try to capture in words some of the numberless escapades he sprang upon a world that was never prepared for him. For now, just the cold hard fact of the hole he's left in the fabric of reality. I've known a lot of amazing people but he was the most amazing. You really have to hand it to the mother of the universe for creating a guy like that.

Carson Mell sent me this beautiful photograph of Brand Park Art and Music Library in Glendale, which was two blocks from the house I lived in during my teens. In those days spent every available moment swooning around this intensely romantic building in a state of otherworldly fervor. This was the original carriage entrance; the boarding alcove is to the left. If this picture extended about ten feet to the right it would show the semispiral alcove where I used to stand, wedged between the walls and almost comatose with ecstasy. I was chased away from there more than once. People must have thought I was crazy. Thanks for the blast, Carson.

Here is the text of my acceptance speech, delivered at The Stranger Genius Awards upon receipt of the coveted porcelain head.

"THERE IS a controversy I have to address. I know some people feel that giving the Stranger Genius award for literature to the creator of comic books, and wordless comic books at that, is a travesty.

The redoubtable Charlie Krafft spoke for many when he posted the following on Facebook:

'I just read that Jim Woodring received a Stranger "Genius Award" for literature. Have any of the cartoon characters he draws ever uttered anything? Was it literature? Had I been a judge for this I would have given The Stranger "Genius" award for literature to a writer, maybe David Stoez or Doug Nufer, not to a guy who draws mutes. If I was Jim W. I would accept this prize then turn around and and give $1,000 each to five deserving local writers and poets. Five persons who toil away with words, not pictures. Those who think cartoonists who don't even use word balloons are entitled to cash awards for "literature" can un-friend me right now and go get in line for another tattoo. You've been so dumbed down by hipster culture you think Archie and Veronica is Crime and Punishment.'

Well, part of me agrees with this; after all, it's the default position. But the part of me that is more, oh, progressive thinks that the Stranger may be ahead of the curve here. They've gone and said that a wordless comic book can be rightfully considered literature, and it falls to you and me to prove otherwise. The question, obviously, is Does literature require words to exist?

Well, now that I think about it, no, I don't think it does. I would go so far as to say Milt Gross' 1930 wordless novel He Done Her Wrong is as much literature as the hackneyed melodramatic plot it tells in pictures. It never occurred to me to care whether He Done Her Wrong was literature before, but, now that you mention it, why not? Perhaps it's only literature in a theoretical or technical sense, like non-musical music or a printed painting. In which case, who cares?

But I don't think the Stranger is playing an elite prank here. I think they see that we are living in a transitional period where traditional categories are melting, blending together. Boundaries everywhere are being dissolved. A high school kid can choose to be either standard gender, or make up a new one. An utter dullard can be the life of the party online. Strictures that no longer need to exist are evaporating. Liberation and paralysis are merging.

Personally I don't think that it's a coincidence that the computer has emerged and become ubiquitous just at the moment when humanity has everything so mapped out and pinned down that the sense of a future has effectively vanished. I think the computer is training wheels for that unborn generation who will live outside the world and ultimately outside the computer, in a state of secular empathetic samadhi. The blurring of the line between the drawn image, the written word, the video and the game is disturbing, but nothing can stop it, and I salute the Stranger for their far-reaching and prophetic vision.

The question of whether I personally deserve this is open to debate. But I think I do, and I can sure use the money. Thank you."

Yes, to my unutterable astonishment and gratification the mechanism is now in place to build what will surely be the world's first six-foot-long replica of a steel dip pen. A lot of people I never met ponied up for this. And a lot of people I do know did likewise, some at considerable sacrifice.
Well, I'm stunned. The pen will go into production as soon as possible. I thank all of you who contributed from the very depths of my being and look forward to the day when the Giant Pen will live among us. God bless America!

HOW THE GIANT PEN WILL WORK

But first, this UPDATE! As of 8:45 PST the total amount raised is $3020. With just sixteen hours to go you may think it's a lost cause. But I tell you, there are matching funds waiting in the wings! If only the amount rises to a certain level... not much more...

The nib itself will be a replica of a dip pen; There will be a brass reservoir that will clip onto the underside. The reservoir will be a receptacle, filled with an eyedropper through the hole in the top of the nib, and contain a nested stack of curved plates to hold and slow the flow of the ink, which will be carried in a narrowing, flattening 'v' channel to the underside of the tines. The ink will be concentrated acrylic ink, partially dehydrated for an extra syrupy viscosity.

The pen will have to be kept level until the stroke is ready to be applied. Before the stroke starts the tines will be primed with a brush. The pen will be tilted until the ink flows onto the paper, and then the flow will be controlled by tilting the pen to let more or less ink flow into the line, as determined by the nature of the line desired.

It's been a slow boat coming, but the Fantagraphics edition of Weathercraft has finally landed on our shores; and if I do say so myself, it's a beautiful thing. 104 tinted pages bound in illustrated green library cloth with a spot-varnished dust jacket just slathered with crucial information about this dense, rich fable of torture, exaltation and amnesia. The plot is so convoluted that I wont even attempt to summarize it here; suffice to say it's rich, my friends... rich.

You can get Weathercraft at any high-tone comic or book store, or you can order it directly from me, in which case you have the option of getting it signed, with a drawing. Frankly (!) I think they printed too few of 'em, so act quick!

MARCH 1- Homer looks exactly, but EXACTLY as it it did on Google Street View... that is to say tiny, with no big buildings at all, and what buildings there are spaced widely apart, like Mugsy Dugan's teeth. I knew where everything was before I got here.

Made it to Anchorage just fine. Flight was a breeze, luggage was
waiting for me. Picked up a polystyrene blue Dodge Vincible and headed out between the mountains and the ice-caked sea. The drive to Homer took 4.5 hours; the first half through some of the most forbidding mountains I've ever prayed would stay where they were. Many signs reading AVALANCHE DANGER 2 MILES DO
NOT STOP.

I can see why people go crazy when they see this place. There is an inherent challenge in this landscape to come on and learn what you're made of. It's impossible not to think of Jack London in those mountains and all too easy to imagine being driven to the extremity of eating frozen horsehide, hair and all.

The second half of the drive was through indifferent logged land seemingly mostly lying fallow. I had had about enough of that when I came over a ridge and WHAM! There was Homer down below, surrounded by water and mountains in the most staggeringly beautiful array I've ever seen.

MARCH 2- I'm staying at The Mermaid Cafe B&B where I have a really nice apartment... well-appointed, comfortable and roomy. The guy who runs the place with his wife Sally is Andy. He has a great book shop in an old log cabin below the apartment. Terrific books, a great selection. He's very convivial, so anytime I get bored or need a break I can saunter down and talk, books, art, illustration and poetry with him. Thank God!

March 3- I hung my show to day and it looks kind of interesting. I'm getting along well with everyone I've met so far. Being alone in the evenings is strange but I like it. They tell me that at the opening on Friday I'll meet people who will be willing to take me out fishing or flying in their airplane.

Moose abound. They roam willy nilly through the town. They aren't dangerous unless they think you're hassling theeir kids. Their kids are friendly and curious. If a mother moose sees you and her child canoodling she will gallop over and break it (and you) up. Moose are enormous, it turns out, as big as horse and a cow combined.

As for hanging the show, it's mostly prints and some sketches attached to the wall with pushpins and clips along the top edge, so they curl and flap.

There is one wonderful feature here in the person of a strangely calm and well-spoken woman who runs a religious artifact shop near the gallery It's a beautiful and profoundly enticing shop crammed full of really nice devotional art from all the Eastern religions, including Bon, the pre-cursor of Buddhism; she says she has had Bon priests in for ceremonies which is easy to believe, given her, but hard to believe as well, given the expense and logistics of getting monks from Tibet to tiny, remote Homer.

She is incredibly erudite about religion and talks about the influence of Amenhotep on Moses' decision to go monotheist as if she were there. I would not have been surprised if she had, when mentioning Amenhotep, said, "Nasty little man. No sense of hygiene at all, and vicious out of proportion even for a Pharaoh. He'd have a slave butchered on the spot just to see what his fat tasted like. Fortunately for me he liked blondes."
The shop is beautifully set up and maintained. It would look perfectly at home in Beverly Hills. It's really like the opening pages of a W.W. Jacobs or Stephen King story.
