Floating or falling? Either way, he doesn't give a Whoopie John Wilfahrt, and that's how I'd like to remember Sluggo forever. You won the hand of Three Card Nancy in one card.

No joke to "get" in the comic sense, which is part of the appeal. That along with the surreal-ness of the panel, made stranger by pulling it from its context. It's an old cartoon, so the surrealism isn't expected. It sort of looks like a Magritte with the vertical stacking of cartoon balloon, Sluggo, and shadow.

I don't know, really, but I agree with everyone .. it's a pretty cool panel.

Just beautiful! I want Bushmiller bushes to be real. They might even be better than the Three Rocks.

If you dig around Scott McCloud's web site, you can find rules for "Five Card Nancy."

It's a game you play with cards made from random panels cut out from books of collected Nancy strips.

This is a great Sluggo panel!

    Good old Sluggo
who hollow-eyed and high sat up smoking in the supernatural darkness of cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities contemplating jazz

    Sluggo
who passed through universities with radiant cool eyes hallucinating Arkansas and Blake-light tragedy among the scholars of war

  8. To think that that genius left the old family business of milling bushes and became a big city Sluggosmith! I love Nancy like I loves my morning whiskey!

    The 'b' is silent.

Did I ever say it? I am the son of Sluggo, who carelessly wasted the best of his dew kissed days, and who looked neither forward nor back, choosing instead to lovingly know each day platonically and lay down with every dusk and know it carnally.

Sluggo, whose gaze fell when they passed the hat. Sluggo, for whom every cooling pie was a gift from God. Sluggo, the enemy of effort, the opposite of opposition.

PLEASE someone make this into a t-shirt!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous1:21 PM

My understanding is that it is a representation of Sluggo's denial while he is incarcerated for 25 to life on a "Three Strikes" conviction for stealing an apple.

Here's my favorite Bushmiller panel of all time- we keep a print of it near the phone in the living room.

..... I don't get it. Somebody enlighten me. All I see is a little kid floating and saying 'no'. Is there an in-joke I'm missing or something?

  23. Surrealism isn't expected in old cartoons? Try Little Nemo, The Upside Downs of Little Lady Lovekins and Old Man Muffaroo, Polly and Her Pals, Krazy Kat, The Nut Brothers (Ches and Wol), and even Dick Tracy, for corn sakes, and I know I'm leaving stuff out.

Years ago, my wife shelled out $40 to get me an original Nancy Sunday page from 1943. Ernie changed a panel, gluing the new one over the old one.

I have a Nancy panel nobody but Ernie has ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anonymous4:41 PM

I so used to take the "stone groove" comix for granted ... Sluggo .. Chilly ... Lulu ... Krazy Kat ... follow with a 'Lone Ranger' 78 chaser ....

Dew-kissed indeed, those halcyon days of yore...

    ReplyDelete
  25. That's pretty cool.

I've never read this comic before or anything, and I really have no clue what I'm talking about, but this is how I take it:

"I am content. I need nothing, I will do nothing, I am fine as I am."

    But that's just me.

    Excellent find.

Maybe it's like Neo in the matrix, saying 'No' to the bullets. In this case, 'No' to falling.

  27. This is comic-strip Xanax. Thanks for posting it. I used to read Nancy comics as a wee one during summers at the lake. I'd get books of them at the bait shop for maybe 20 cents apiece. This panel reminds me of evenings up on the top bunk with Nancy, Richie Rich, and Lulu--whippoorwills singing, crickets chirping, and endless boxes of Mallomars.

  28. Sluggo = licking the chocolates so's nobody else'd want 'em.

Sluggo = The Not Charlie Brown

    Sluggo = Lazyman's sensei

Sluggo = Mebbe the child-god progeny out of Happy Hooligan, by way of "The People Upstairs" after a trip thru/around/sideways/under Befuddle Hall.

Sluggo = all those and more, the boy's boy

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous8:01 PM

SPOON BOY: Your spoon does not bend because it is just that, a spoon. Mine bends because there is no spoon, just my mind.

Neo watches as it curls into a knot.

SPOON BOY: Link yourself to the spoon. Become the spoon and bend yourself. Neo nods, again holding up his spoon.

NEO: There is no spoon. Right.

I love this, it seems to heal a weird memory:

I was around 5 years old, sick in bed with a high fever. I was so sick that I was hallucinating... At the foot of my bed, a tiny Nancy was chasing a tiny Sluggo (or maybe Sluggo was chasing Nancy, it's been so long I can't remember now) across my blanket with a stick, intent on giving a serious beating. I screamed, and my parents came running, but I never could really quite explain to them what had terrified me.

  44. Anonymous12:37 PM

I'm wearing the T-shirt as I type this, and I gotta tell ya, it's a real attention-getter. And for the most part, it completely puzzles the hell out of people.

My own read is that Sluggo has reached the perfect state of no-effort, the satori-like denial of the "small mind" and all of the suffering that comes with it. But I would be very, very surprised if that's what Ernie Bushmiller actually meant when he penned it.

My other interpretation is that it's the comic equivalent of a koan -- something designed to tie our rational mind in knots so that we can glimpse enlightenment.

If it's not one of those two, I have no frigging idea what it is.

Put me on the list of those who would, just out of curiosity, like to see the original strip. I do, however, retain the right to interpret it however I damn well please.

I don't know where to view it, but the concept was a clear plastic hammock. I think it was 3 panels, the first Nancy approaches and you see the trees in perspective with Sluggo floating between; Nancy asks something about levitation lessons. Sluggo says no in the second panel, and in the third you can see the tethers attatched to the trees, and Sluggo says "Plastic hammock".
